Zurich Opera

Season Saved with IP Remote

Classic(al) Live IP Remote Production

To save its 2020-21 season, Zurich Opera used an IP-based, near-zero latency setup to physically separate musicians, the choir and soloists, while uniting them on a virtual level at the hall.

With a little help from two V__remote4 units, the soloists on stage were able to follow the conductor on a screen, while the orchestra was replaced by 10 speakers in the pit.

Thanks to expert 3D Spatial Sound Wave audio mixing that included acoustic movements by the choir, the realism was stunning. No sound reinforcement was used for the soloists.

Even purists—including other opera houses—recognize the unique value of Zurich Opera’s approach that involves two locations separated by 1km/0.8 miles. Zurich Opera received the AVard 2021 for “Best Innovative Integration” for this project.

Early on, we found that the only way to keep video latency manageable was to synchronize the video cameras to the network.
